Who we are & our purpose: We’re a team of educators from Melbourne in the process of organizing a Startup Weekend - type event for high school students around Melbourne and need your help to make it a reality. The purpose of the event is two fold: To provide a platform that will give high school students the opportunity to see their ideas to come to life with industry help. To give students a voice in helping to ‘fix’ the education system in a way that is more attuned to their needs. We realize that the current system is not optimum for the kids of today and that the changes that we have seen have been from top-down. At this event, for which the theme is “School sucks”, we want students to voice their own concerns and also be the drivers of the solution to the problem. Our ultimate aim is that we want to show students the opportunities that exist outside of the ‘mainstream’ and also demonstrate to them that they have the capacity to make a change. The back-end so far.. We’re currently in talks with RMIT university’s School of Science and IT as well as School of Business to make the final arrangements for the 3-day event and are waiting for a reply for movers and shakers from the Education Department of Victoria. What we need: What we haven’t managed to secure ATM is a set of mentors who would be willing to help the groups plan/design/develop their ideas. We would ask that people only commit to what they feel comfortable. We’re also looking for guest speakers too – if that’s something that interests you then we can definitely have a chat about what that would look like.
